Why Do We Sail?

     "We all want something beautiful."
                              -Counting Crows

     This is why:

Sunday night we decided to cast off and enjoy a sunset cruise. Not much wind, but enough to fill the sails....

No chop.  Even the waves seemed to be winding down from a busy weekend

  The sunset was spectacular...

THIS is why we sail.

The Newest New Crew

"We were young, and we were improvin'!"
                                        -John Mellencamp

Sunday dawned, hot, sunny and humid.  No plan, no schedule and no wind, so no hurry to leave the dock.  We enjoyed a lazy breakfast with Gavin and Sylvia, and SWMBO had just set off in Quack, our inflatable, on a water refill mission, so I decided to take a walk down the dock.  I heard a familiar voice call my name, I turn, and there's my brother, Brent!

Apparently, I need to check my email more often.  He had fired off a signal that he was going to come down to see us.
     I hadn't read it.

So my pleasant surprise visit was his announced plan.

That pretty much describes the difference between the two of us in a nutshell.

Turns out that my favourite sister-in-law, Anne, and my niece and nephew were also here.  Yay!  New Crew!

    REALLY new crew.

My niece and nephew, Danica and Preston  (Don't even think about calling them Dani and Presto.  Or Nicky and Tony.  I tried that.  Damn near got my godfather card pulled.)  are about a year and a half old, with all of the wobbly curiosity that entails.

We've never had toddlers on board.  How baby -safe is our boat?  How baby- safe is the weather?  I did a quick scan of the bay outside the breakwall- looks relatively calm.  A few whitecaps, but not bad.

Wait- do we have PFDs that will fit toddlers???
Never mind, Brent and Anne had picked up Roots toddler PFDs.  Great, the newest crew has the shiniest, trendiest lifejackets on the boat

We get everybody loaded up and decide that a tour up the river will be the best course of action- we get on the water, but there will be enough visual stimulation on shore to keep the twins occupied while being out of the waves, and it's a quick return to the dock if anybody starts kicking and screaming.

     We needn't have worried.

Upon leaving the marina, Danica promptly fell asleep in SWMBO's arms...

... While Preston kept watch and gave directions...

   and Danica continued to snooze...

   ...while Preston checked the compass...

     ...and Danica napped some more...

    ...while Preston helped steer...

      ...and Danica slumbered...

.while Preston steered the other way.

No seasickness, no screaming, no crying, no tantrums...

I was really proud of Brent.

     The kids were great, too!

To top off a great afternoon, we all went out for dinner.  Thanks for treating to a great meal at the Arbor, Brent and Ann!

We hope to go sailing with you again soon!

Happy Canada Day!

"It all started with the big bang!"
                        -Bare Naked Ladies

This year, Canada Day actually fell on a Friday, giving us a true long weekend.

Is this a great summer, or what?

Thursday after work we packed provisions, pups and people into Lady Liberty (jeep) and Leonard (Smart car) and headed down to the Dock for an extended sojourn.  In typical compact- sport -pup fashion, as soon as a car door opened, Finn launched himself down the Dock to visit George on The Instigator, while SWMBO and I off-loaded and Inky gimped her patrol of the perimeter, establishing her primacy over all she surveyed, geese or no geese.

Then the wheels came off Finn's evening.

The mutt  was roughly 300 yards outbound on the 400 yard trip, ears back, legs pumping, tongue flapping, in full fur-covered cruise missile mode, when somebody set off a firecracker in the distance.  Without missing a step he reversed course, and REALLY put the coals to her, streaking back to the refuge of the jeep,  whereupon he made every effort to hide under the front seat.

He really doesn't like firecrackers.  A lot.  Eventually he was coaxed back onto the Dock and down to Whiskeyjack, where he huddled in his cave under the v-berth while the rest of us enjoyed the sounds of live music drifting over from the marina pavilion.

Next morning was the start of Port Dover's Canada Day festivities.  C-Day is a Very Big Deal in Dover, with a parade on Main Street, a dog show, Rib Fest, music, house decoration contests, yard sales,...
and the Boat Parade.  Alas,  I had to work, but SWMBO was able to capture some of the participants from the marina.

Later that afternoon,  an impromptu parade was created in the marina, when a 92' Lazzara lumbered up to the fuel dock and occupied the majority of the fairway to boot.

Here's the quick stats, according to the fuel dock staff:
$9 million value. Or, about the total value of all of the boats on Docks 1,2,3,4, and 6.
   $5000 to fill up.
$50 000 of fuel to travel from Dover to Miami, where the boat spends the winter.
There is an enclosed PWC hangar on the stern that accomodates the requisite PWCs and RIBs.

She pulled in for a pump- out, but the mission apparently went unaccomplished because the marina's pump didn't have enough lift- it could pump okay, but not enough to accomplish the "out" part of "pump-out."

Friday I decided to drain the fuel filter, adjust  the valve clearance and retorque the head on our iron spinnaker.  In so doing, I managed to eliminate her ability to run.  Oh well, fix it on Saturday.  It was time to eat.  Jack joined us for a tasty meal of garlic-sauteed shrimp and vegetable risotto.  Finn hid from the fireworks.  Inky was happy to hang with Bas.  Bas was happy for the snacks.  Win/win/win...except for Finn.

On Saturday, at the opposite end of the size spectrum  from the Lazzara, Gavin and Sylvia headed out in Persephone, eager to test out Gavin's new jib downhaul...  and his sporty new hat.  Apparently everything worked because they all came back, poodle included.

It was Gavin and Sylvia's turn to cook, so we enjoyed barbecued ribs (ask Gavin for his "bone dirt" rub recipe- damn tasty.)  and asparagus and mushrooms while we watched the sunset.

Meanwhile, what were the powerboaters doing?

James and Mikey had invested in heavy firepower and light beer.

Something tells me these are not CSA approved.

Mikey invested so heavily in light beer, he thought that waterskiing to Pottahawk (about 11 nautical miles into the wind, with 2-3 foot chop) was a great idea.

Best were laid, the departure was documented....

  Buh-bye!

.... and Mikey came to his senses and stayed in the boat.  Or something.  As the saying goes, "pics or it didn't happen!"
I haven't got pics, so the excuses don't matter.  It didn't happen.

Sunday was a day of rest, with a pleasant surprise crew.

  But, that's another story.

More Birds

          "...There is a season..."
                         -Pete Seeger

Adult Canada geese are a constant Dock annoyance.  They crap on the Dock, they crap on the grass, they honk, they hiss,  and they cause fairway traffic jams when they go for a slow swim en masse.

But Canada goslings are freakin' adorable.

     The family:

Dad's not big on paparazzi, apparently:

A heron of some sort decided to stop in and check out the scene:

I guess herons like to go to the beach on long weekends, too.

Low-buck Project of the Week

"Comin' on like you're some kinda movie star..."
                                                                -Trooper

Wandering down the dock with my eyes peeled for anything new, I spied on The 20th Hole  a new cockpit table.

I got the backstory from the 20th Hole's skipper.  He needed a cockpit table, spotted an end table at a garage sale for $10, pulled off the legs, screwed on a pedestal base and boom!  Now he's got a fancy-shmancy table to support his wine goblet.

     Is it  marine-grade?
     It's $10.
     Is it teak?
     It's $10
Does it have eight coats of varnish to protect it from the elements?
     It's $10.
Won't the weather delaminate the table and open up the joints and the cheap brass to rust  and the whole thing to fall apart in a few years?
     It's $10.

Boat stuff that would get you sneers on other docks gets you compliments on our Dock.  We reserve our sneers for boats that don't leave the dock, boats that can't dock, boats with perpetually rotating radar regardless of conditions, PWCs and Searays...

     ...But those are other stories.

Meet the FD

"'cause I need you by my side..."
                      -Fontella Bass

In our ongoing effort to support coastal security and public safety,  Dock Six once again graciously hosted a training event vital to public safety on Thursday evening,  when the volunteer firefighters went for a swim.

(Okay, they didn't actually ASK us if they could train on our Dock, but who the hell is going to say no to the people who are ballsy enough to run into situations when everyone else is running out?)

Before you attempt a rescue and/or recovery operation ,you need someone to rescue and/or recover.   So, the "victim" jumps in the water

"Help!  Help!  et cetera, et cetera..."

"Uh, a little help here?"

"Keep your shirt on, I'm coming!"

   Almost there...

"Here, put on this swim noodle..."

"You good?"
"Yeah, I'm good."
"Okay, don't drown now.  The paperwork is a bitch."

"Come on, does it look like I need a second guy to rescue me? Really?"

"Hey, it's true- if you fart in one of these suits, you float WAY better."

    "Okay boss, we're coming. ..."

"It's okay, I can walk from here."

Thanks for everything you do, Norfolk County Firefighters.
